Refinishing Your Cabinets vs. Buying New Cabinets

Refinishing Vs. Buying

Making the decision to remodel your Kitchen is arguably one of the biggest investments you’ll make, next to purchasing your home. Before you decide whether to refinish your existing cabinets or buy new, here’s are a few things to consider.

What are you willing to spend? According to Better Homes and Garden the average cost of a kitchen remodel can be anywhere from $15,000 to $45,000 depending on price. Refinishing your cabinets can often times achieve the same custom look at a 1/3 of the price.

How fast are you looking to complete your project? Semi-Custom cabinets can take several weeks to order not including installation. Stock cabinets found at your big box retailers may be readily available, but may have limited style choices.  Depending on size, refinishing your cabinets has the shortest lead time. Since we’re working with existing cabinetry, from start to finish an entire kitchen can usually be done within 2 weeks.

What look are you going for? Many of the custom looks that you see from high end cabinet makers can be achieved through cabinet refinishing.  Today people are leaning towards trends that stand the test of time, like Soft Whites, Gray tones, and Antique finishes. Do you have a reliable contractor? Whomever you decide to contract with, be it a family friend or a contractor that came recommended. Do your homework. Verify that their License is current, check with the Better Business Bureau, ask to see samples of their work, and ask for references. Check sites like Yelp, and Angie’s list before making a commitment to any one contractor.

In the end choose what is going to be best for your lifestyle.
